Diversity Committee

The Business Law Section remains firmly committed to the goal of encouraging greater diversity among its members. Toward this end, the Committee has undertaken a Diversity Initiative, headed by the Special Subcommittee on Diversity.

Celebrating the Diversity in Our Profession

New York City
On July 25, 2013, the Business Law Section joined with the Metropolitan Black Bar Association for a dinner event at the Penn Club of New York. A keynote address was given by Hon. Milton A. Tingling (Justice of the Supreme Court, New York County).

Business Organizations Law Committee

The Committee reviews new and proposed legislation and court cases involving the Business Corporation Law and other New York laws affecting corporations and other business entities, including: partnerships, limited partnerships, and limited liability companies. It takes an active role in proposing legislation which affects corporations and other business entities.

About the Business Law Section

The Business Law Section, with a membership of approximately 3,500, is one of the largest Sections of the New York State Bar Association. Its members consist of attorneys whose practice involves some aspect of commerce or finance although the focus of the practice of the members is quite diverse – ranging from securities to consumer finance. To accommodate this breadth of practice, the Business Law Section is composed of committees which offer the practitioner with commercial clients information in such diverse areas as: Bankruptcy, Banking, Business Organizations Law, Franchise Distribution and Licensing, Derivatives and Structured Products, Securities Regulation and the constantly evolving area of Technology and Venture Law. These Committees hold separate meetings for the purpose of reviewing current developments in their areas. Members enjoy the benefits of participating in discussions relating to developments in the business and financial services world and the opportunity to expand their professional network. Attendance at committee meetings and other scheduled Section meetings can also serve to fulfill MCLE requirements.
The Section publishes the NY Business Law Journal which is designed to provide practice-oriented insight and guidance relevant to the business law practitioner, with special emphasis on lawyers who practice in New York State.
The Business Law Section has been in the forefront of introducing, monitoring and evaluating legal developments in the areas of business and finance on both federal and New York State levels.

Securities Regulation Committee

The Securities Regulation Committee of the Business Law Section reviews new U.S. and international proposals and developments concerning securities regulation, informs members of significant developments in these areas and advocates positions through the preparation and submission of comment letters and articles regarding securities regulation of companies. It also monitors and comments on developments regarding: the securities and investment adviser industries, corporate governance , financial reporting and financial market regulations.
Business Law Section Annual Law Student Writing Competition

The Business Law Section sponsors an annual Student Writing Competition, open to all students who are candidates for the JD or LLM degree at an accredited law school during the year in which the article is submitted. Cash prizes of $1,500 and $1,000.
