The mission of the Young
Entertainment Lawyers Committee (“Committee”) is to provide law students and
lawyers of all levels interested in pursuing a career in entertainment law with
an opportunity to network with and learn from attorneys practicing in various
industries of entertainment law. Our Committee strives to achieve this
goal by offering its members with both entertaining and educational events that
encourage candid communications and foster professional networking.
The Committee generally operates
under the “it’s all about who you know” motto and structures its events
accordingly. Therefore even though
certain events are structured as panel discussions and lectures, the Committee
is sensitive to the limitations presented by such forums, which are often
perceived as a too “stuffy” or “intimidating” by the Committee’s largely
junior member constituents.
Alternatively, events which are centered around a theme or collaborative
activity are favored by Committee members and are generally more effective at
fostering mentorships and partnerships.
Our most recent event was an
exclusive guided tour of the Whitney Museum of Modern American Art’s Biennial
exhibit which was enjoyed by a sold-out crowd. Another notable event was
entitled "Speed-Networking" which
allowed junior attorneys and law students to interact with guest
attorneys in the film, TV, fine art and theatrical fields. The guest
attorneys fielded questions from the attendees during one-on-one sessions and
shared their personal success stories. The individual sessions were
followed by an informal cocktail hour, which provided all participants with an
opportunity to socialize in a friendly atmosphere. The positive feedback
from Committee members after this event greatly exceeded our expectations. We look forward to continuing to serve our
growing, and increasingly enthusiastic, member base by offering similar events
in the year ahead.
