January 31, 2020: NYSBA and Seoul Bar Association Announce Formal Relationship

New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) President Henry M. Greenberg and Seoul Bar Association President JongWoo Park signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two organizations on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the 2020 NYSBA Annual Meeting. 

The two leaders met during the American Bar Association’s 2019 summer meeting in San Francisco. There they discussed mutual cooperation and growth, and NYSBA extended an invitation to the Seoul Bar to meet in New York. The Seoul Bar Association has 20,500 members, about 74% of all lawyers in Korea. 

“Lawyers around the world are more interdependent and deeply connected than ever, and we must act upon that,” said Greenberg. “It is more important than ever that lawyers around the world to build relationships and deepen our mutual understanding. The world needs lawyers everywhere to work together.”

In addition to Mr. Park, the Seoul Bar Association delegation will include SeungMin Lee, director of international affairs, and Hye-ryun Lee, a member of the international affairs team.

They will be greeted by International Section Chair Diane O’Connell and members of the section’s executive committee, as well as members of NYSBA’s Executive Committee.

“Since the International Section’s Regional meeting in Seoul, we have expanded our efforts to collaborate with the South Korean legal community and look forward to the next chapter in furthering these relationships,” said O’Connell.

The Seoul Bar Association sees the protection of basic human rights and realization of social justice as a global issue, one that the New York State Bar Association closely shares. 

An MOU memorializes the parties’ intent to cooperate in areas of specified in the MOU. The friendship agreement between NYSBA and the Seoul Bar Association provides a framework through the two bars can deepen their mutual knowledge and understanding and continue to develop a positive and mutually beneficial relationship.
