Penny Abernathy
will be the featured speaker at
a panel
meeting of the New York
State Bar Association (NYSBA) Task Force
on
Free Expression in the Digital Age on Monday
September 16. The panel meeting will
be livestreamed for
the public starting at 9 a.m.
The task force, announced by NYSBA President Hank Greenberg this past June, has set
out to tackle the crisis
of
local journalism in the
digital age and will make
recommendations on how
New York
state, the legal, and
business sectors can protect local
news and define the future
of
local media in New York and across the country.
Abernathy, a renowned journalism
professional and the Knight Chair
in Journalism and Digital Media Economics at the University of North Carolina,
is
a leading expert on the crisis and
economics of the decline of local journalism.
Her experience as a reporter,
editor and senior media business
executive gives her a
unique perspective in preserving quality
journalism by helping
news organizations succeed economically in the digital world.
New York has been directly
impacted by the loss of hometown journalism. According
to a 2018 study published
by Professor Abernathy, “the number of newspapers in New York state has decreased by 34 percent since
2004.”
Viewers will be allowed to ask questions of the presenter
in the chat feature
on
the livestreaming platform. Chats will be
monitored by a moderator.
