New York State Bar
Association (NYSBA) President Hank Greenberg issued the following statement
regarding the passing of Robert M. Morgenthau, the legendary former U.S.
Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Manhattan’s longest-tenured district
attorney, who retired at the end of 2009 after more than four decades of public
service.
“New York has lost a
legal giant. Robert M. Morgenthau was the people’s lawyer,” said
Greenberg. “He devoted a lifetime engaged in the highest calling
afforded by the legal profession—serving and protecting the public. His
career exemplifies the promise and potential of public service. On
behalf of the State Bar, I extend sincere sympathies to his family
and friends.”
Morgenthau received the
Gold Medal Award, NYSBA’s highest honor, in 2011 for his decades of
extraordinary service to the people of New York. Morgenthau was previously honored
by NYSBA with the Excellence in Public Service Award and the Outstanding
Prosecutor Award.
